As probably most of you know, my home country Slovenia once belonged to a larger federation, that fell apart in the nineties. Politics aside, the people from ex-Yugoslavian countries are still tightly bonded. Beside tasty and greasy food we all share a passion for heavy partying and personally I am always honored, when I'm invited to a gig in one of those countries. Croats, Serbs, Bosnians, Macedonians and Montenegrians still take me as one of them and I also feel that way.
I think that it's important we don't forget our roots and former brothers. Memories from my childhood and puberty are all tightly connected to our former republic and most of them are warm and sometimes funny. I still remember driving around in old Yugos, stealing Bajadera chocolate candys from mom's secret hiding places and singing our national anthem on Day of youth.
That's why I decided to dedicate a very special project to our ex common homeland. I'm naming it »UDYU – Ujedine Države Jugoslavije«. I want to show everybody the beauty and diversity of this beautiful land – the Triglav mountain in Slovenia, Croatian islands, beautiful cities of Sarajevo and Mostar in Bosnia, Belgrade and Novi Sad in Serbia, great rivers, secret beaches,... I could go on and on, but instead of a geography lesson I will name all of my upcoming tracks after special places throughout the Balkans, starting with Novi Sad – a landmark in electronic music scene, known worldwide for its famous Exit festival. The festival attracts nearly 200.000 people every year to the capitol of Serbian province of Vojvodina. I played there in 2006 and Exit is still one of my favorite open-air festivals. Also Novi Sad has some strong electronic music movement, with Respect DJs as their flagship.
Do you like the project? Do you have a place to suggest? If you want me to dedicate a track to your hometown, leave your suggestion with a firm argumentation in the comments I'm sure that just like music is infinite, we can find a special place in UDYU for each track coming!
